Body Condition Score (BCS) cheat sheet

Veterinarians use a 9-point Body Condition Score. You can check BCS at home in about 30 seconds:

  • 1-3/9 (Underweight): ribs, spine, and hip bones visible without palpation. No fat layer. Seek veterinary evaluation.
  • 4-5/9 (Ideal): ribs easily felt without pressing through a minimal fat layer. Visible waist from above; visible abdominal tuck from the side. This is the target.
  • 6/9 (Slightly overweight): ribs felt with slight pressure. Waist is less defined. Abdominal tuck minimal.
  • 7-9/9 (Overweight to obese): ribs difficult or impossible to feel. No waist. Fat pad over belly and tail base. Increased risk of joint disease, diabetes, and shortened lifespan.

If your pet is BCS 7-9, a licensed RexVet veterinarian can build a structured weight-loss plan via video visit ($64.99 in FL, NY, VA) — including prescription weight-loss diets where appropriate.
