The modern, research-backed formula comes from a 2019 UC San Diego epigenetic study: human_age = 16 * ln(dog_age) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm. This formula reflects actual DNA-methylation age. The older "multiply by 7" rule is inaccurate, especially for puppies (who age fast in their first 2 years) and seniors (who age slower than 7×).

Is the 7 dog-years-per-1-human-year rule accurate?

No. The 7× rule is a rough shortcut that doesn't match how dogs actually age. Dogs reach reproductive maturity by year 1 (roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human), then age slower. Breed and size matter too — small breeds tend to live 14-16 years; giant breeds rarely reach 10. The epigenetic formula is more accurate than 7×.

Do small and large dogs age at the same rate?

Why this formula beats "multiply by 7"

The 7× rule treats dog aging as linear — but dogs aren't humans with a constant 7× speed-up. Dogs reach reproductive maturity by their first birthday (roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human in DNA methylation terms), then their aging slows down. A 1-year-old dog is closer to a 30-year-old human than to a 7-year-old, and a 13-year-old dog is closer to 73 in human-age terms than to 91.

That difference matters clinically. A 10-year-old large-breed dog is firmly senior and benefits from twice-yearly exams plus annual bloodwork. A 5-year-old dog under the old rule "should" be 35 (mid-life), but under the modern formula is closer to 57 — a useful prompt to start senior-care planning earlier.

Approximate breed-size adjustments

The epigenetic formula uses an average curve. In reality, size meaningfully changes life expectancy:

Small breeds (under 20 lb): typically 14-16 year lifespan. Senior status by 9-10.
Medium breeds (20-50 lb): typically 12-14 year lifespan. Senior by 8.
Large breeds (50-90 lb): typically 10-12 year lifespan. Senior by 7.
Giant breeds (over 90 lb): typically 7-10 year lifespan. Senior by 5-6.
