Online Vet That Prescribes — Real Rx, Real Licensed Vets

Most pet parents who search for an online vet specifically want one that can actually write a prescription. Many telehealth services route you to a vet tech or chatbot who can only recommend OTC products. RexVet's licensed veterinarians can prescribe pet medications during your video visit and route them to your local pharmacy or to RexVetRx, our in-house pharmacy that ships to FL, NY, and VA pet parents.

Licensed veterinarians with full prescribing authority

Every RexVet veterinarian holds an active license in the patient's state and the legal authority to write veterinary prescriptions. Not a vet tech reviewing forms. Not a chatbot escalating to a vet only on request. The vet who examines your pet by video is the vet who writes the prescription.

Standard veterinary prescriptions covered

Common prescriptions written through RexVet include skin & allergy medications (Apoquel, Cytopoint, prednisone), antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanate, doxycycline, clindamycin), ear medications, anti-anxiety meds (trazodone, gabapentin, fluoxetine), GI meds (Cerenia, metoclopramide), eye medications, pain medications (carprofen, gabapentin), and prescription diets. Controlled substances follow standard state and federal restrictions.

Route to your pharmacy or our pharmacy

After the visit, prescriptions can be sent to your local pharmacy for same-day pickup, or to RexVetRx — RexVet's in-house pharmacy — for shipping. Either way, it's a one-step process from your video visit.

How prescribing actually works through a telehealth vet

Florida, New York, and Virginia all allow licensed veterinarians to write prescriptions via telehealth once a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) is established. RexVet establishes the VCPR during your video visit. The vet examines your pet on video, takes a full history, makes a clinical decision, and writes the prescription. The prescription is then routed electronically to your pharmacy of choice — either a local pharmacy or RexVetRx for shipping.

What an online vet typically can't prescribe

Controlled substances (e.g., tramadol, certain anxiety medications) have stricter state and federal rules. Some require an in-person exam, some require the prescribing vet to have a DEA registration in the patient's state. In situations where a controlled substance is appropriate but cannot be prescribed via telehealth, the RexVet vet will explain the limitation and point you to a local clinic that can prescribe.

Refills, transitions, and second opinions

RexVet handles prescription refills for established conditions (skin allergies, anxiety, chronic GI, heart medications, seizure medications) for patients whose history we have on file. We also handle prescription transitions when you switch from an in-person clinic — bring your previous prescriptions and we can continue them after a video evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online vet really write prescriptions?

Yes, when state law permits it. Florida, New York, and Virginia all allow licensed veterinarians to prescribe via telehealth once a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) is established during the visit. RexVet operates in all three states.

What kinds of pet prescriptions can be written online?

Most non-controlled veterinary medications: antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, skin and allergy medications, ear medications, anti-anxiety medications (non-controlled), GI medications, eye medications, prescription diets, parasite preventives, and routine chronic-condition medications. Controlled substances and certain narrow categories require in-person evaluation.

Does the vet send the prescription to my local pharmacy or to RexVet's pharmacy?

Either — your choice at the end of the visit. Local pharmacy pickup is faster and lets you use Costco, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, or an independent pharmacy. RexVetRx is RexVet's in-house pharmacy and ships to pet parents in our served states. Both options route the prescription electronically.

Can I refill prescriptions through RexVet?

Yes. For established conditions where RexVet has the patient's history (or where you can share previous prescription records), refills can be issued through a follow-up visit. The Family Plan covers 4 visits + unlimited messaging per year, which works well for ongoing refill needs.

What about controlled substances or DEA-regulated medications?

Stricter rules apply. Some controlled substances can be prescribed via telehealth in specific circumstances; others require an in-person visit or DEA registration in the patient's state. If your pet's situation requires a controlled substance the RexVet vet cannot prescribe, the vet will explain and refer you to a local clinic.

Is the prescription written via telehealth as valid as one from an in-person vet?

Yes. A prescription written by a licensed veterinarian after a valid VCPR is legally and clinically a real prescription regardless of how the consultation was conducted. It's filled the same way at the same pharmacies.
