Core vs lifestyle vaccines

AAHA classifies dog vaccines into core and lifestyle (non-core) categories:

  • Core (recommended for every dog): rabies, distemper, hepatitis/adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and leptospirosis. The "DHPP" or "DAPP" combo shot covers most of these.
  • Lifestyle / non-core (recommended by exposure): Bordetella (kennel cough — required for daycare, boarding, and most grooming), Lyme (tick-endemic regions), canine influenza (H3N2/H3N8 — outbreak-driven), rattlesnake (geographic).
