Emergency signals
When to contact a veterinarian
- Not an emergency — for bloat, hit-by-car, respiratory distress, seizure, or collapse, go to Blue Pearl (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) or Animal Medical Center
- Any suspected toxin exposure — ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 first
Frequently asked questions
How do I book an NYC online vet visit?
Visit rexvet.org, click Book Appointment, choose a time slot (same-day available most days), pay $64.99, complete a short health history, and connect via video with a licensed New York DVM. Total time typically under 30 minutes end to end.
Is RexVet cheaper than NYC vets?
Yes — $64.99 vs $150-$250 exam fee at Bond Vet, Small Door, Animal Medical Center, Blue Pearl, or your local vet clinic. Savings are $100-$200 per routine visit. For true emergencies (bloat, hit-by-car, respiratory distress), always go to a physical ER.
Do you serve all 5 boroughs?
Yes — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, plus Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk). Any New York zip code is covered by our licensed New York DVMs.
Can you prescribe fireworks anxiety meds for July 4?
Yes — Prozac (fluoxetine), Trazodone, or Gabapentin for situational anxiety are all oral medications our New York DVMs prescribe by video visit. Book at least 2-3 days before the fireworks so you have time to fill and test the dose.
What can you NOT do by video?
We cannot inject medications (Cytopoint, Adequan, Convenia require in-clinic administration), perform physical exams for suspected fractures, or diagnose things that require imaging, biopsy, or lab tests. For those cases, we refer to your local vet or a NYC emergency hospital.
Do you take insurance?
Most pet insurance providers reimburse RexVet visits — Trupanion, Nationwide, Embrace, ASPCA, Pets Best, MetLife, and Lemonade. HSA and FSA cards accepted. Payment via credit card at booking; reimbursement handled by you afterward.
How is RexVet different from other NYC telehealth options?
RexVet is a 501(c)(3) non-profit — surplus revenue funds subsidized care for families who can't afford in-person vet visits. Bond Vet and Small Door are in-clinic. Vetster and Chewy Connect With A Vet are for-profit. Our NY-licensed DVMs meet prescription authority requirements that many chat services don't.
