What a 20-30 minute online vet consultation can actually cover
More than people expect. A structured video consultation can: take a complete medical history; perform a visual examination including posture, gait, body condition, mucous membrane color, respiratory effort, and behavioral observation; assess specific symptoms (skin lesions, ear discharge, eye issues, GI symptoms, anxiety); make a working diagnosis for common conditions; write a treatment plan; prescribe appropriate medications where state law permits; and document the visit for future reference.
What an online consultation can't replace
Hands-on diagnostic procedures — palpation, auscultation with a stethoscope, otoscopy (looking inside the ear canal), fundoscopy (looking inside the eye), bloodwork, imaging, biopsies, cytology, and culture. When these are clinically indicated, the consulting vet will refer you to your closest appropriate clinic for that portion. The video consultation often clarifies whether these diagnostics are actually needed.
How to prepare for the most productive consultation
Have your pet visible during the call. Have a notepad with the specific symptoms, when they started, and what you've tried. If skin or eye or wound related, prepare good lighting and a way to angle the camera. If GI related, note frequency, consistency, food intake, and water intake. If anxiety or behavioral, describe specific triggers and timing. Have current medications and dosages ready.
