Gabapentin for Cats
Gabapentin is widely used in cats for pre-visit anxiety, chronic pain, and sometimes seizure control. It's one of the most-prescribed cat medications because of its safety profile.
What Gabapentin is used for in cats
- Pre-visit / travel anxiety
- Chronic pain (osteoarthritis, dental, neurologic)
- Adjunctive seizure control
- Post-surgical pain management
How it works
Gabapentin modulates calcium channels in nerve cells, calming pain and anxiety signaling. It typically takes 1-2 hours to take effect.
Available formulations
100 mg capsule (most common for cats)
Compounded liquid (for accurate dosing)
50 mg compounded capsule
Side effects to know
Common side effects
- • Sedation/sleepiness
- • Mild ataxia (wobbling)
- • Increased appetite
These usually resolve on their own. If they persist past the first few doses, ask your vet.
Call your vet immediately if you see
- ⚠ Severe sedation lasting more than 12 hours
- ⚠ Vomiting that persists
- ⚠ Excessive disorientation
Drug interactions
- • Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium (reduce absorption — separate by 2 hours)
- • Opioid pain medications (additive sedation)
- • Other sedative drugs
When not to use
- • Cats with severe kidney disease (dose adjustment required)
- • Cats sensitive to gabapentin
Monitoring during treatment
First-time use should be given when you can observe the cat for 2-3 hours. Liquid formulations made for humans may contain xylitol — confirm with your vet that the compounded version is xylitol-free.

Frequently asked questions
How fast does gabapentin work in cats?
For anxiety, give 1-2 hours before the trigger (e.g. vet visit, car ride). For pain, effects begin within 1-2 hours of the dose.
Is gabapentin safe for cats?
Yes — gabapentin has an excellent safety profile in cats and is one of the most-prescribed feline medications. The main side effect is sedation, which usually fades within a few doses.
How long does the gabapentin effect last in cats?
Single-dose anxiety relief lasts 8-12 hours. For chronic use, it's typically given 2-3 times daily.
Can RexVet prescribe gabapentin for my cat?
Yes — common reasons include pre-visit anxiety, suspected arthritis pain, or post-surgical recovery. A RexVet video visit and we ship through RexVetRx.
My cat hates the capsule — what do I do?
Many vets prescribe a compounded chicken-flavored liquid that cats accept more readily. Ask your vet about compounding options.
