How to Cancel Your Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan — Step-by-Step 2026 Guide

Complete guide to canceling a Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan: phone number, cancellation form, early-termination fee math, and what to do next for your pet's care.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Tiffany Delacruz, DVM

Before you call — three things to have in front of you

  • **Your OWP contract or welcome packet** — Confirms your renewal date and monthly rate
  • **A list of services used this plan year** — Vaccines, dental cleaning, diagnostic bloodwork, exams. Banfield uses this to calculate any early-termination balance
  • **Your bank/credit card statement** — So you know how much you've paid so far in this plan year

How to cancel — the phone script

Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan cannot be canceled through the app or the main Banfield.com site. You must call OWP customer service or send written notice. The current phone number is 888-899-7071 (verify on your welcome packet in case it has changed).

What to say on the call

  • "Hi, I'd like to cancel my Optimum Wellness Plan for [pet's name]."
  • "Can you tell me my current early-termination balance based on services used and payments made?"
  • "Please email me a written confirmation of cancellation and my final balance."
  • "Please also send my pet's complete medical records to [your email or new vet's fax/email]."

How Banfield calculates the early-termination amount

Per Banfield's OWP Terms and Conditions (publicly published on Banfield.com), the amount you owe when you cancel is the LESSER of two figures:

  • **Option A** — The remaining monthly payments left on your 12-month contract
  • **Option B** — The retail (non-discounted) cost of all covered services already delivered this plan year, minus everything you've already paid

Worked example

  • You're 6 months into a $45/month plan ($540/year). You've paid $270 so far.
  • **Option A (remaining months):** 6 months × $45 = $270 owed
  • **Option B (retail services used):** Wellness exam retail $88 + rabies vaccine $32 + DHPP $42 + fecal $45 + dental cleaning $415 = $622 retail. Minus $270 paid = $352 owed.
  • **You pay the lesser** — $270 in this case. Banfield charges the card on file.

When cancellation is essentially free

  • You're in the last 30 days before renewal — only one monthly payment left in either calculation
  • You have used minimal services this plan year (no dental, no bloodwork) — Option B may be very small
  • You have used NO services this plan year — Option B is $0; Banfield refunds nothing but charges nothing extra

How to cancel in writing (alternative to phone)

You can send written cancellation by mail or email. Written notice creates a paper trail if Banfield disputes the cancellation date later.

  • **Email** — owp@banfield.com. Subject: "Cancellation Request — [Your Name] — Pet [Pet Name]"
  • **Mail** — Banfield Pet Hospital, Attn: Optimum Wellness Plan, PO Box 1329, Portland, OR 97207 (verify current address on your welcome packet)
  • **Include** — Your name, pet's name, plan number, date of birth, and phrase "I am canceling my Optimum Wellness Plan effective [date]."

Get your pet's medical records

Whether you cancel or not, request a copy of your pet's medical records for your files or your next vet. In every US state, pet medical records must be released to the owner upon request — usually within 5-10 business days.

  • **What to ask for** — Vaccine history with dates and lot numbers, exam notes, diagnostic results (bloodwork, urinalysis, imaging), dental charts, and any prescription history
  • **How to ask** — Call your local Banfield or email medicalrecords@banfield.com. Free upon request in most states
  • **Where to send** — Ask for PDF via email; forward to your next vet or upload to your file

What comes next — pay-per-visit or a new wellness plan?

Many pet parents leaving Banfield look for pay-per-visit vet care rather than another annual contract. Options include:

  • **Local traditional vet** — Full physical exam capability. Pay per visit ($75-200 exam) with no monthly commitment.
  • **Online vet telehealth (like RexVet)** — $64.99 per video visit for refills, allergy flare-ups, GI upset, anxiety scripts, parasite prevention refills. Not a full physical exam replacement. Licensed in FL, NY, VA. No contract. No monthly fee.
  • **A different in-person wellness plan** — VCA CareClub, Petco Vetco, and other brands have similar models. Read the cancellation terms before signing.
  • **Self-pay + pet insurance** — Insurance covers unexpected illness/injury. You pay for wellness visits out of pocket as needed.

When to contact a veterinarian

  • This article covers cancellation logistics — for a pet health question or emergency, call your local vet or a pet emergency hospital
  • For pet emergencies, always go to a physical veterinary ER — telehealth cannot handle emergencies

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel my Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan online or through the app?

No. As of 2026, Banfield requires phone or written cancellation. Call 888-899-7071 or email owp@banfield.com. The Banfield app and MyBanfield account portal do not offer a self-service cancellation option.

How much will I owe if I cancel my Banfield plan early?

The lesser of two amounts: (a) the total of your remaining monthly payments for the plan year, or (b) the retail non-discounted cost of all services you've used this plan year, minus what you've already paid. Banfield's OWP Terms explain this. Ask a rep to calculate both figures on the call.

Can Banfield refuse to cancel my plan?

No. Under the OWP Terms and Conditions, you have the right to cancel at any time. What you cannot do is avoid the early-termination balance (Option A or B, whichever is less). If a rep refuses to process a cancellation, ask for a supervisor and note the date and rep name for your records.

Will canceling hurt my credit?

Not directly — Banfield doesn't report to credit bureaus for OWP cancellations. However, if you don't pay the final early-termination balance, Banfield may send the account to a third-party collections agency, and collections activity can appear on credit reports. Pay the final balance to avoid this.

What's the best time to cancel?

The 30 days before your annual renewal date. At that point, both calculations (remaining months and retail services minus paid) are usually at their smallest. Look at your OWP welcome packet for the exact renewal date, or ask a rep on the call.

Do I still get my pet's vaccine records after canceling?

Yes. Medical records are legally your pet's property in every US state. Request them by phone at your local Banfield or by email at medicalrecords@banfield.com. Records must be released within 5-10 business days in most states, usually free.

Is RexVet a replacement for Banfield?

For some visit types, yes — allergy refills, parasite prevention refills, anxiety scripts, GI upset triage, ear infection triage — at $64.99 per video visit with no monthly commitment, licensed DVMs in FL/NY/VA. For a full physical exam, vaccinations, dental cleaning, or emergencies, you still need an in-person vet. Many pet parents pair RexVet with an annual wellness visit at any traditional vet.
