What Northern Virginia pet parents most commonly ask about

  • Tick prevention and Lyme disease — VA is a heavy tick burden state, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever risk is real
  • Heartworm prevention — mosquito season is 8-9 months per year
  • Allergies — spring pollen and fall ragweed are severe in the DC metro
  • Anxiety — apartment building noise, commute stress, moving vans and PCS moves for military families
  • Puppy and kitten wellness — new adoptions from Loudoun and Fairfax shelters
  • Senior care — chronic condition maintenance for aging pets

What our Virginia DVMs can prescribe

  • **Allergy** — Apoquel oral tablet
  • **Parasite prevention** — Simparica Trio, NexGard, Bravecto, Heartgard Plus, Interceptor Plus, Revolution Plus (cats). Year-round important given VA tick burden.
  • **Anxiety** — Prozac (fluoxetine), Trazodone, Gabapentin — for July 4 fireworks and PCS-move stress
  • **Nausea and GI** — Cerenia oral tablet (great for pre-move nausea), metronidazole for giardia
  • **Infections** — Clavamox, doxycycline (essential for tick disease treatment), cephalexin, azithromycin

Emergency signals

When to contact a veterinarian

  • Not an emergency — for bloat, hit-by-car, respiratory distress, seizure, or collapse, go to SouthPaws (Fairfax), The LifeCentre (Leesburg), or the Veterinary Referral Center of Northern Virginia
  • Any suspected toxin exposure — ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 first

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a Northern Virginia online vet visit?

Visit rexvet.org, click Book Appointment, choose a time slot (same-day available most days), pay $64.99, complete a short health history, and connect via video with a licensed Virginia DVM. Total time typically under 30 minutes end to end.

Is RexVet cheaper than Northern Virginia vets?

Yes — $64.99 vs $175-$250 exam fee at SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists, The LifeCentre, or Veterinary Referral Center. Savings are $100-$200 per routine visit. For true emergencies (bloat, hit-by-car, respiratory distress), always go to a physical ER.

Do you serve Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun?

Yes — every county in Northern Virginia. Also Prince William, Fauquier, and any other Virginia county. Any Virginia zip code is covered by our licensed Virginia DVMs.

Can you prescribe tick disease treatment (doxycycline) for my dog?

Yes — doxycycline is an oral antibiotic our Virginia DVMs prescribe by video visit for confirmed tick disease (Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever). If a 4Dx SNAP test is positive, we can start treatment same-day.

What about PCS move anxiety for military families?

Anxiety medications (Prozac, Trazodone, Gabapentin) are common Northern Virginia prescriptions given the density of military families and government workers with frequent moves. Book 2-3 weeks before your move date so we can test the dose.

What can you NOT do by video?

We cannot inject medications (Cytopoint, Adequan, Convenia require in-clinic administration), perform physical exams for suspected fractures, or diagnose things that require imaging, biopsy, or lab tests. For those cases, we refer to your local vet or a Northern Virginia emergency hospital.

Do you take pet insurance?

Most pet insurance providers reimburse RexVet visits — Trupanion, Nationwide, Embrace, ASPCA, Pets Best, MetLife. HSA and FSA cards accepted (great for federal employees). Payment via credit card at booking; reimbursement handled by you afterward.
