Which pet insurance providers reimburse RexVet

Based on our records, the following major pet insurance providers reimburse RexVet visits when the policy includes telehealth or the specific service is covered. Reimbursement rates and deductibles vary by policy tier. Always confirm with your provider before booking.

  • **Nationwide** — Yes, includes Whole Pet and Major Medical plans
  • **Embrace** — Yes, telehealth typically covered

How to file a reimbursement claim after your visit

  • 1. Complete your RexVet video visit and pay $64.99
  • 2. RexVet emails you an itemized visit receipt (usually within an hour)
  • 3. Log into your pet insurance provider's app or website
  • 4. Upload the RexVet receipt + any prescription details
  • 5. Include the reason for the visit (medical necessity)
  • 6. Reimbursement arrives via ACH direct deposit in 5-14 business days

HSA and FSA — the fastest path

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can be used directly to pay for RexVet visits. The IRS classifies veterinary care as an eligible expense when the animal is a certified service animal, but many HSA/FSA administrators approve routine pet visits without documentation. Federal workers, contractors, and self-employed pet parents especially benefit — the funds are pre-tax, so effectively saves 20-30% depending on your bracket.

What most insurance policies do NOT cover

  • **Routine wellness visits** — Annual physicals, vaccines, fecal exams (unless you have a wellness rider)
  • **Pre-existing conditions** — Anything documented before your policy started or during a waiting period
  • **Cosmetic procedures** — Ear cropping, tail docking, declawing
  • **Breeding, pregnancy, obstetrics** — Excluded from most policies
  • **Experimental treatments** — Not FDA-approved

Three questions to ask your insurer before booking

  • 1. **"Do you cover veterinary telehealth?"** Most do, but some older policies specifically exclude it.
  • 2. **"What's my remaining deductible for this policy year?"** If you haven't met it, the first ~$250-500 of covered claims come out of pocket.
  • 3. **"What's the reimbursement percentage after deductible?"** Common rates: 70%, 80%, 90%. Higher reimbursement usually means higher monthly premium.

Sample math — how much you actually pay after insurance

  • **Scenario A** — Trupanion 90% coverage, deductible already met: You pay $64.99, get reimbursed $58.49 → net cost $6.50
  • **Scenario B** — Embrace 80% coverage, deductible already met: You pay $64.99, get reimbursed $51.99 → net cost $13
  • **Scenario C** — Healthy Paws 70% coverage, deductible still owed $200: You pay $64.99 out of pocket (applied to deductible), no reimbursement until deductible met → net cost $64.99 (but progress on deductible)

Frequently asked questions

Which pet insurance provider is best for telehealth reimbursement?

Trupanion, Nationwide, and Embrace are consistently praised for telehealth reimbursement in our pet parents' experience. That said, "best" depends on your specific pet's age, breed, and pre-existing conditions. Get quotes from 2-3 providers before choosing.

How do I get an itemized receipt from RexVet?

Receipts are emailed automatically within an hour of your video visit. If you don't receive one, contact support@rexvet.org. Receipts include: date of service, provider name (DVM), visit fee ($64.99), medical necessity notes, and diagnosis code where applicable.

Can I use my HSA card to pay directly?

Yes — most HSA and FSA administrators accept payment for veterinary care. Enter your HSA/FSA card at checkout the same way you'd enter any credit card. Save the RexVet receipt in case your HSA administrator asks for documentation later.

Does pet insurance cover the medication too?

Depends on your policy. Insurance may cover prescription medications for illness (Apoquel for allergies, doxycycline for infection, etc.) but usually not preventives (Simparica Trio, Heartgard Plus, NexGard) unless you have a wellness rider. Ask your provider.

What if my insurance denies the claim?

Common reasons: policy doesn't cover telehealth, condition is pre-existing, or documentation is incomplete. If denied, request the specific denial reason in writing, then appeal with additional records if warranted. RexVet cannot appeal on your behalf but can provide additional documentation.

Is RexVet cheaper than my copay at an in-person vet?

Usually. $64.99 flat is often lower than the out-of-pocket portion of a $150-200 in-person exam even after 80-90% insurance reimbursement. Plus RexVet has no exam fee, no travel time, and often same-day slots.

Do you offer discounts for uninsured pet parents?

Our subsidized care program helps FL/NY/VA families facing cost barriers. Contact support@rexvet.org for details. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, we reinvest surplus revenue into keeping care accessible.
