Benadryl for Dogs

Benadryl is a widely used antihistamine that can help mild allergic reactions, itching, motion sickness, and mild anxiety in dogs. It is over-the-counter for humans but should be dosed by a vet for pets.

Generic: diphenhydramine Class: First-generation antihistamine Over-the-counter (vet guidance recommended) FDA-approved for dogs
Important: This page is an educational reference. Never start, stop, or change your pet's medication without veterinary guidance. Specific dosing depends on your pet's weight, condition, and other medications. To get a personalized prescription or refill, talk to a licensed RexVet veterinarian.

What Benadryl is used for in dogs

  • Mild allergic reactions (e.g. insect bite swelling)
  • Mild seasonal itching
  • Motion sickness during travel
  • Mild situational anxiety

How it works

Diphenhydramine blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing allergy symptoms like itching, swelling, and sneezing. Its sedative side effect is why it's sometimes used for mild anxiety.

Available formulations

25 mg tablet (human OTC)

12.5 mg children's chewable

Liquid (avoid alcohol-containing formulas)

Frequently asked questions

How much Benadryl can I give my dog?

General guidance is 1 mg per pound of body weight, 2-3 times daily — but always confirm with your veterinarian first, especially for puppies, seniors, or dogs on other medications.

Can Benadryl calm an anxious dog?

It can help with very mild anxiety, mostly due to its drowsiness side effect. For real anxiety (storm phobia, separation anxiety), trazodone or gabapentin from a vet works much better.

What kind of Benadryl is safe for dogs?

Plain diphenhydramine tablets only. Avoid Benadryl Allergy Plus, Benadryl-D, or any 'PM' or 'cold and flu' formulation — these contain other ingredients (decongestants, acetaminophen) that are dangerous to dogs.

Can RexVet recommend Benadryl for my dog?

Yes — a RexVet video visit can confirm whether your dog's symptoms are right for Benadryl, recommend the correct dose, and rule out anything that needs prescription medication.

When should I NOT give my dog Benadryl?

Don't give Benadryl for severe allergic reactions (facial swelling, difficulty breathing, hives spreading rapidly) — those need an emergency vet immediately, not antihistamines at home.
