Gabapentin for Dogs

Gabapentin is a prescription medication used in dogs primarily for chronic pain, anxiety relief, and seizure control. It's commonly added to multi-drug treatment plans for arthritis or post-surgical pain.

Important: This page is an educational reference. Never start, stop, or change your pet's medication without veterinary guidance. Specific dosing depends on your pet's weight, condition, and other medications. To get a personalized prescription or refill, talk to a licensed RexVet veterinarian.

What Gabapentin is used for in dogs

  • Chronic neuropathic pain (e.g. arthritis, disc disease)
  • Pre-visit anxiety in fearful dogs
  • Adjunctive seizure control
  • Post-surgical pain management

How it works

Gabapentin modulates calcium channels in nerve cells, calming overactive pain and anxiety signaling. It does not block pain at the source — it dampens how the nervous system perceives it.

Frequently asked questions

Is gabapentin safe for dogs?

Yes, gabapentin is widely used and considered safe in dogs when prescribed by a veterinarian. The most common side effect is sedation, which usually fades within a few doses.

How long does it take gabapentin to work in dogs?

For pain, effects start within 1-2 hours. For pre-visit anxiety, a dose is typically given 1-2 hours before the stressful event. For seizure control, the full benefit develops over several days.

Can I give my dog human gabapentin?

Many vets prescribe the same human-generic gabapentin for dogs — but only at vet-determined doses. Never use a human liquid formulation containing xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Can RexVet prescribe gabapentin for my dog?

Yes, when a valid vet-client relationship is established. For a new diagnosis (e.g. unexplained chronic pain), an in-person workup is often needed first, but RexVet can manage refills and dose adjustments by video.

What if I miss a dose?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip and resume the regular schedule. Never double up — gabapentin's sedative effect is dose-dependent.
