Rimadyl for Dogs

Generic: carprofen Class: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) Prescription required FDA-approved for dogs
Important: This page is an educational reference. Never start, stop, or change your pet's medication without veterinary guidance. Specific dosing depends on your pet's weight, condition, and other medications. To get a personalized prescription or refill, talk to a licensed RexVet veterinarian.

What Rimadyl is used for in dogs

  • Osteoarthritis pain in dogs
  • Post-surgical pain control
  • Soft tissue injury inflammation
  • Some inflammatory conditions

How it works

Rimadyl selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme involved in inflammation while preserving more of the COX-1 enzyme that protects the stomach lining. This makes it gentler on the GI tract than older NSAIDs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take Rimadyl to work?

Most dogs show pain relief within 1-2 hours of the first dose, with full effect within 24-48 hours. For arthritis, the cumulative benefit may continue improving over the first week.

Can I give Rimadyl with food?

Yes — giving with food helps reduce stomach upset and is generally recommended.

Is Rimadyl safe long-term?

Yes when monitored properly. Many arthritic dogs take Rimadyl for years. Periodic bloodwork is the key to catching kidney or liver issues early.

Can RexVet refill my dog's Rimadyl?

Yes, for dogs with an established diagnosis and recent bloodwork. RexVet can schedule a video check-in and send the refill through RexVetRx.

What if I miss a Rimadyl dose?

Give it when you remember unless it's close to the next scheduled dose — then skip and continue normally. Never give two doses at once.
