Puppy Not Eating: 7 Causes, Timeline & When to Call a Vet — FL, NY & VA
A puppy not eating is more urgent than an adult dog — low blood sugar and dehydration hit fast. 7 causes and clear timeline. FL/NY/VA-licensed vets by $64.99 video.

A puppy skipping meals is not the same as an adult dog skipping meals. Puppies have small energy reserves and get sick fast. This guide is for FL, NY, and VA puppy parents to understand what's normal, what's an emergency, and how quickly to act. The under-12-week window is especially critical.
Why puppies are more urgent than adult dogs
Puppies burn glucose fast and store little. Toy breed puppies under 3 months can develop life-threatening low blood sugar within 4 to 6 hours of not eating. Symptoms include wobbling, weakness, tremors, pale gums, and collapse. This is a true emergency — not a next-day appointment.
The 7 common causes
- Teething — 3 to 6 months old. Sore gums cause slower eating, softer food helps.
- Stress — new home, new family, first few days always uncertain. Try to keep food consistent with what the breeder or shelter fed.
- Food dislike or abrupt diet change — puppies are picky and get upset stomach with abrupt change. Transition over 7 days.
- Intestinal parasites — roundworms, hookworms, giardia are extremely common in puppies. Deworming schedule matters.
- Viral infection — parvovirus in unvaccinated puppies is deadly. Distemper and coronavirus also cause anorexia + GI signs.
- Foreign body obstruction — puppies chew and swallow things. Toys, socks, rocks, corn cobs. Vomiting + not eating + belly pain = ER.
- Vaccine reactions — mild lethargy and decreased appetite is common 24-48 hours after vaccination. Severe reactions (facial swelling, hives, vomiting) are ER.
Red flags — ER TODAY
- Puppy under 4 months not eating for more than 8 hours — regardless of other symptoms
- Vomiting + not eating — parvo screen priority
- Diarrhea + not eating — dehydration risk within hours
- Wobbly, weak, tremors, pale gums — hypoglycemia emergency
- Distended abdomen + retching or unproductive vomiting — obstruction or gastric issue
- Unvaccinated puppy exposed to other dogs + not eating — parvo protocol
- Puppy that ate a foreign object + not eating — imaging needed
The hypoglycemia rescue technique
For toy breed puppies showing early hypoglycemia (wobbly, weak) while you're driving to a vet: rub 1 teaspoon of Karo syrup, honey, or maple syrup on the gums and inside cheeks. Do NOT pour into the mouth if the puppy is very weak — aspiration risk. This buys 15 to 30 minutes to get to a vet. It is not a fix.
Home encouragement (for puppies that are alert and healthy)
- Warm the food slightly — smells stronger, more appetizing
- Add a small amount of low-sodium chicken broth or tuna water
- Offer canned puppy food mixed with kibble
- Small frequent meals — 4 to 6 per day for puppies under 4 months
- Quiet feeding location — remove distractions and other pets
- Do not feed table scraps — sets up begging and GI upset
Florida: parasites + heat + parvo
Florida has year-round parasite transmission — every FL puppy needs monthly heartworm and hookworm/roundworm prevention starting at 8 weeks. Parvo is endemic in FL shelters and adoption channels — any unvaccinated FL puppy with vomiting + not eating is parvo until proven otherwise.
New York: apartment stress + adoption transitions
NYC apartment puppies often skip meals during the first 2 weeks — stress of a new home. Try to keep the food consistent with what the shelter or breeder fed. NY winter chill can also decrease appetite in tiny toy breeds — feed indoors, warm the food.
Virginia: rural exposure + tick disease
VA rural puppies encounter wildlife feces, standing water, and tick exposure early. Ehrlichia and Anaplasma cause anorexia in dogs of all ages. Rural VA puppies need 4Dx testing at 6 months alongside routine deworming.
When telehealth fits — and when it doesn't
- Food transition planning, picky eating, teething — telehealth ideal
- Deworming schedules, parasite prevention recommendations — telehealth
- Mild post-vaccine appetite loss (12-24 hours) — telehealth check-in
- ANY puppy under 4 months not eating for more than 8 hours — in-person
- Vomiting or diarrhea plus not eating — in-person same day
- Wobbly, weak, or pale gums — ER
- Unvaccinated puppy + GI symptoms — in-person parvo protocol
Emergency signals

Frequently asked questions
How long can a puppy go without eating?
Adult dogs can safely skip meals for up to 24 hours. Puppies cannot. Under 4 months old, more than 8 hours without eating warrants a vet call. Toy breeds under 3 months can develop hypoglycemia within 4 to 6 hours — call sooner if wobbly or weak.
Can a RexVet online vet help with my puppy not eating?
Yes for food transition, teething guidance, picky eating, deworming schedules, and mild post-vaccine appetite loss. $64.99 video visits with FL/NY/VA-licensed vets. Any puppy with vomiting, lethargy, or suspected parvo needs in-person care same day.
What do I do if my puppy has hypoglycemia signs?
For a wobbly, weak, or tremoring puppy (especially toy breed), rub 1 tsp of Karo syrup, honey, or maple syrup on the gums and inside cheeks while driving to a vet. Do NOT pour into the mouth if the puppy is very weak — aspiration risk. This is temporary, not a fix.
Is my puppy not eating because of teething?
Between 3 and 6 months, teething causes gum soreness that can slow eating. Softening kibble with warm water, offering wet food, and providing chilled teething toys often helps. Teething alone should NOT cause a puppy to skip meals entirely — that's another problem.
Could this be parvo?
Parvo is a top concern in any unvaccinated puppy with not eating, vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms progress rapidly — lethargy, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and death within 48 to 72 hours untreated. Get to a vet immediately if your unvaccinated puppy has any GI symptoms plus not eating.
